DESCRIPTION

The Management skills course reflects current research and practical concerns, while acknowledging the changing nature of workplace, the need to create meaningful and healthy work environment, with specific attention to motivation, stress management, smart work practices and positive leadership culture. The need to create a welcoming organizational environment for all employees, puts a special emphasis on the global aspects of organizational life and on workforce diversity, thus supporting students to become more comfortable and competent in dealing with people from different cultures, and equipping them with tools to manage communication and conflict in multicultural and virtual work environments. Work-life within and beyond organizations involves more and more teamwork. The course gives an extended coverage of teams, including the most recent findings on team characteristics, effective multicultural and/or virtual groups and team leadership.

The course will consist of lectures and seminars every week. Students will learn the basic concepts from lectures and the compulsory reading, then analyze and use the skills in cases and critically evaluate them in form of group discussions. The sequence of topics is built step by step from the self (please see the schedule) to managing groups, and so are the assignments. By analyzing cases and showing the enhanced performance and better results, an attitude towards conscious use of skills will be developed. On the knowledge gained, and the positive attitude developed, the skill level will be built by practicing in class and outside of it. For effective skill development, understanding, practicing in controlled environment, and repeating in practice are all needed. The lectures and the literature, the cases and role playing games, and the individual assignments all have their function in this development.
